The MIT Campus Safety Working Group (CSWG) provides oversight and guidance for MIT’s access control and physical security systems, and the data associated with those systems and their elements. The working group:

• Defines consistent operating procedures for managing MIT’s physical security systems, and the data associated with those systems and devices, including video recording, access control, and intrusion detection.
• Reviews all campus physical security services to provide consistent oversight management and to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness.
• Reviews all campus-wide physical security projects which require monitoring and/or response from MIT Police.
• Provides guidance to the MIT community about meeting physical security needs.

The working group meets monthly.

Governance Role

The CSWG will:

• Review and render decisions and recommendations on requests for:
  • Installation of new video surveillance cameras, intrusion alarms, duress buttons, blue light emergency phones, and any associated access control system elements or processes
  • Removal of existing video surveillance cameras, intrusion alarms, duress buttons, blue light emergency phones, and any associated access control system elements or processes
  • Granting electronic access to the campus video surveillance system
  • Viewing of live and archived video surveillance footage
  • Any exceptions to current physical security policies and operating procedures
• Recommend status and exception requests for referral to the Information Technology Policy Committee (ITPC) for review and governance

The Information Technology Policy Committee (ITPC) serves as the final governance committee for video surveillance camera processes.  The ITPC will:

• Review policy or process exception requests referred by the CSWG
• Review and provide recommendations upon requests referred by the CSWG
